Testimonials

Thank you for all your help with this policy over the years. You have the best customer service, always so friendly and responsive!

Pam, associate medical director

The Risk Management Program is one of the best tools that a good medical practitioner can have in his briefcase. It enhances everything you do and provides the necessary peace of mind required nowadays to practice the profession.

I found APA, Inc. to be reliable, easy to contact and available to me. I feel safe being insured with them.

I am a school psychologist in private practice and have professional coverage through American Professional Agency, Inc. I operate in the same fast-paced, sometimes seemingly insane world that most of us live in, and the people at American Professional Agency have, for years, always provided a breath of fresh air. Guess what? They answer the phones. They seem genuinely happy with their jobs and their days, and they seem to like each other. And when I have a question, I get help immediately. It’s hard to believe a business like this still exists, but it does! I cannot recommend American Professional Agency highly enough.

I wish to thank your underwriter for her assistance with my renewal. It was a complicated case, but everything was explained very clearly and provided guidance to a “confused” customer. She went above and beyond the scope of her duties to make sure that I not only understood the complications of my renewal but also guided me to make the best decision for malpractice insurance coverage. She is to be commended for her excellence in communication and customer service.

Summary of benefits

Why did APA develop this new partnership?

American Professional Agency is the new preferred provider of professional and business liability insurance for APA members. The agreement with our former partner, The Trust, was set to expire in June 2018, so APA and The Trust initiated discussions over a period of months in 2017 to consider terms for renewal. When renewal terms were not reached, APA opened a request for proposal process to three high-quality insurance providers as bidders. (The Trust was then given an opportunity to match the terms in the American Professional Agency agreement and declined to do so.) American Professional Agency’s proposal provided greater value for our members than any of the other bidders.

I just renewed my policy with The Trust. What should I do?

The best thing to do is to call for a quote several months prior to your renewal date since a policy can be issued 90 days prior to the effective date. By obtaining a quote in advance, familiarizing yourself with the policy, understanding the benefits offered and the available discounts, the transition should be seamless. In most cases you can apply online or you may contact the psychologists department by phone (800) 421-6694 extension 2304, by email, or online.

If you would like a reminder quote closer to your policy renewal date, American Professional Agency offers a quick and easy solution. Just fill out a quick form and a representative will contact you at the appropriate time.

How does this affect my coverage? Am I required to switch insurance companies?

While APA has switched insurance partners, this will have no impact on current insurance policies held by members themselves. The new partnership with the American Professional Agency offers an additional option to APA members and allows a choice of insurance companies. APA members who switch to the American Professional Agency will receive a 10% new business discount the first year and a 20% discount in every year that a policy is purchased. There are also many other discounts available for which you may qualify. In most cases it is beneficial for APA members to switch since there may be a substantial savings on your premium. As the exclusive and sole preferred insurance provider, American Professional Agency will gladly provide a no-obligation, competitive quote free of charge. Existing American Professional Agency policyholders will be able to obtain this APA member benefit on renewal of their policy with American Professional Agency.

Are there any benefits other than the 20% APA member discount?

Yes, there are many other benefits and discounts. In addition to the APA member discount, you may qualify for a new business discount, a part-time discount, a new graduate discount, a continuing education discount, a risk management discount, and a practice setting discount.

Individual and group coverage is available and the policy will be tailored to your needs.

Several of the benefits are listed below. For a list of all of the discounts and benefits on the policy you can review the brochure (PDF, 758KB). The psychologists professional liability insurance contract is available for your review on the American Professional Agency website. The following features are a few of the highlights:

Do I need to buy a tail or extended reporting period endorsement (ERP) if I switch my coverage?

Most members will not need to purchase tail coverage from their current insurance provider. Occurrence form policies do not require tail coverage when you terminate a policy. This allows you to easily switch your policy and benefit from the lowest premium offered in the first year.

The claims-made policies issued by the American Professional Agency offer “prior acts” coverage which replaces the coverage on your existing policy negating the need to purchase tail coverage from your current insurer. Tail coverage (ERP) essentially extends the reporting period to report for coverage of future claims that are made based on events that occurred during the time period your policy was in force.

The American Professional Agency provides a “free tail” in the event of your death or if you become permanently disabled. If you permanently retire, are 55 years or older, have held the policy for five continuous years or more, and there have been no sexual misconduct claims in the last five years the “tail” is offered to you free of charge. The “tail” is only available when the policy is terminated and it may also be obtained for a charge. Members who are considering switching and are within five years of retirement should consider the length of coverage requirement when weighing their options. A representative from the American Professional Agency can help you understand your options and obligations related to retirement coverage.

Can I get coverage (and a discount) for my group practice?

Yes, American Professional Agency offers coverage for both individuals and groups in the psychologists program providing that the lead purchaser is a psychologist. Each psychologist who is an APA member will benefit every year from the 20% APA membership discount. Since multiple discounts can be applied, it is best to send your current declarations page, by fax (631) 750-2076 or email to obtain the most accurate and discounted premium.

Does American Professional Agency offer free risk management consultations? Are there ethical consults available?

Yes, American Professional Agency offers free risk management consultations with claims experts with no appointment required and no time limit on the conversation.

While American Professional Agency does not currently offer ethics consultations with psychologists, APA does provide that service to its members and is considering expansion of that program. Details about the APA ethics consultations service are available here.

How does this change affect state psychological associations?

This change in APA’s sole authorized and preferred liability insurance provider does not affect state psychological associations. Those associations are free to continue to seek sponsorships or other revenue from other sources.
